Work & Experience

Monique is a first-generation college graduate of San Jose State University where she majored in Justice Studies with a minor in Human Rights. As an undergrad, Monique was a member of the Criminal Justice Honor Society and participated in community work through her Human Rights minor program by assisting undocumented and marinalized populations in San Jose, CA with applying for DACA. Monique also interned with the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Santa Clara, CA, alongside rehabilitation officers to assist inmates from various backgrounds with their in-custody programs.

She was raised with the knowledge of the struggles her grandparents endured as immigrants in the United States and bears witness to the impact their sacrifices in the fields of Salinas, CA had on her family and the opportunities they helped provide. She admires her grandfather’s activism alongside Cesar Chavez and cherishes the photo she has of her grandfather in the New York Times memorializing his fight for fair work and equal pay for migrant farm workers.
She can recall being 9 years old experiencing her young uncle get sentenced to over 15 years in state prison. This is what sparked her passion in criminal justice and prisoner’s rights.
