About Violeta Alvarez

Violeta grew up in a low-income neighborhood in San Diego County, about 15 miles from the U.S./Mexico Border. At an early age, she went through many personal obstacles that ultimately led her to be passionate about criminal justice reform. She is a Latina, first-generation college student and now, a J.D. Candidate. She also has two sons of her own, ten and two-years old.

Work & Experience

Violeta started working at young age but it wasn’t until she was at UC Berkeley that she became heavily involved in social justice work. As an undergrad, she was selected to participate in the JusticeCorps Student Member Program. She committed to 300 hours of service in one year at the Self-Help Clinics in Contra Costa. There, she assisted self-represented litigants and aided in resolving important legal matters.

Additionally, Violeta was the Co-facilitator for Teach in Prison at UCB for almost three years—a student-led class—which consisted of tutoring at San Quentin State Prison and leading a two-hour course each week for 50+ students. She was also involved with the grassroots organization Underground Scholars which ultimately resulted in the institutionalization of the program on campus. Violeta became the first full-time Program Director—directly serving formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students seeking to transfer to UC Berkeley or another UC. Under her leadership, there was an 100% transfer rate to a UC and an Ambassadorship Program throughout the state of CA helping expand the program.

Violeta was hired as a Law Clerk at The Nieves Law Firm in the Summer of 2019 while simultaneously continuing her law studies at UCH.
