The Maguire Correctional Facility — known locally as the main jail — is San Mateo County’s primary detention facility, located in downtown Redwood City. It primarily houses adult male inmates, both pretrial detainees and those serving sentences for misdemeanors and felonies. Anyone arrested by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, the Redwood City Police, or any other San Mateo County law enforcement agency is typically booked here. Female inmates and minimum-security inmates are usually housed at the Maple Street Correctional Center, also in Redwood City.

If a Loved One Has Just Been Booked

To confirm someone is in custody, use the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Inmate Locator or call (650) 363-4000. Have the person’s full name and date of birth ready.

A few things worth knowing in those first hours:

  • The booking number assigned at intake is needed for visitation, sending mail, and depositing funds. Note it down.
  • All inmate phone calls are recorded. Don’t discuss what happened over the jail phone.
  • Arraignment typically happens within 48 hours of arrest, excluding weekends and holidays. San Mateo County criminal cases are heard at the Hall of Justice on Bradford Street, near the jail.

Bail and Release

Bail amounts are set by the San Mateo County bail schedule. Bail can be posted in cash or through a licensed bail bondsman. An attorney can request a bail hearing to argue for reduction or release on own recognizance (OR release). For lower-level offenses, the sheriff’s office may release someone on a citation without requiring bail.

San Mateo County also offers alternative sentencing options through its Alternative Sentencing Bureau: the Sheriff’s Work Program (labor in lieu of confinement), Electronic Monitoring (home detention with GPS), and Work Furlough (continuing employment while serving a sentence). Eligibility depends on the case; an attorney can help determine whether these are available.

Visiting Someone at Maguire

All visitors must register at least one day in advance by calling (650) 363-4000, extension 6070, between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Visits are 45 minutes, with one person allowed per visit.

A few things to know:

  • Bring valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID — driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID.
  • Convicted felons and anyone incarcerated in San Mateo County within the past six months need specific approval from the Watch Commander before visiting.
  • Dress code is strict — no skirts, dresses, or shorts reaching above fingertip level (arms at sides), no revealing or provocative clothing, no crop tops or low-cut tops, no visible offensive or gang-related tattoos.
  • Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with proof of relationship.
