Status: Closed — operations moved to the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse at 500 G Street

The Gordon D. Schaber Sacramento County Courthouse — long known as the downtown Sacramento courthouse — was for decades the main facility of the Sacramento Superior Court, located at 720 9th Street between G and H Streets. Built in 1965 with 22 courtrooms originally and later expanded to 44 to handle Sacramento County’s growing caseload, the Schaber Courthouse served as the primary venue for civil and criminal cases throughout the county for nearly six decades.
The courthouse is now closed. All operations have moved to the new Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse at 500 G Street in the Railyards District a few blocks away. The new 18-story, 53-courtroom facility opened in 2025-2026 and consolidates the criminal and civil operations previously housed at the Schaber Courthouse and the Hall of Justice on 6th Street.
Where Cases Are Heard Now
The new Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse at 500 G Street is now the primary criminal and civil court facility for Sacramento County. The public entrance is at the corner of 5th and G Streets. Main phone numbers remain the same:

If you were given a court date that listed the Schaber Courthouse, your case has been moved to the new building at 500 G Street. Check the Sacramento Superior Court website or contact the court directly to confirm your hearing location.
Other Sacramento Superior Court facilities remain operational:
- William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse — 3341 Power Inn Road (family law, juvenile dependency, probate)
- Carol Miller Justice Center — 301 Bicentennial Circle (small claims, traffic, landlord/tenant)
- Juvenile Courthouse — 9605 Kiefer Boulevard (juvenile delinquency)
What This Means for Defendants
The relocation doesn’t change the underlying criminal process. Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender, and Sheriff’s Office continue to operate as before. The Sacramento County Main Jail at 651 I Street remains the primary intake and pretrial detention facility, and in-custody defendants are transported to the new courthouse for hearings.
What it does mean: if you’ve practiced or appeared at the Schaber Courthouse, the new building is a different design with different security entry points, courtroom layouts, and parking arrangements. Plan extra time on your first visit to find the building and navigate to your assigned department.
