Court System: Yolo County Superior Court
The Yolo County Courthouse is the central — and effectively only — courthouse for the Yolo County Superior Court. The five-story facility opened in 2015 and consolidated court operations that had previously been spread across multiple buildings in downtown Woodland, including the historic 1917 courthouse that’s now on the National Register of Historic Places. With 14 courtrooms and consolidated clerk operations, this is where all Yolo County cases are heard — Woodland, Davis, West Sacramento, Winters, and surrounding communities.
Types of Cases Heard
The Yolo County Courthouse handles the full range of court matters:
- Criminal cases — felony and misdemeanor arraignments, preliminary hearings, motions, pretrial conferences, trials, and sentencing
- Civil cases — including unlimited civil, limited civil, and small claims
- Family law — divorce, custody, support, domestic violence restraining orders
- Juvenile — both delinquency and dependency
- Probate — wills, estates, conservatorships, guardianships
- Traffic — infractions, traffic-related misdemeanors
In-custody arraignments are held Monday through Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Department 1.
What to Expect at a Hearing
Court hearings typically start at 8:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., though specific times vary by department. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early — every visitor goes through security screening at the main lobby.
A few things to know before your hearing:
- Dress conservatively — business or business-casual attire.
- Security screening operates like airport TSA — no weapons or recording devices.
- Phones must be silenced or turned off in courtrooms.
- The first floor includes consolidated clerk offices for criminal, civil, traffic, and family law filings, as well as a payment center.
The facility also includes a self-help center, family law facilitator, mediation rooms, and a children’s playroom — useful resources if you’re handling your own case or need childcare during a hearing.
Parking and Logistics
Loading and unloading zones are at the front of the courthouse on Main Street. ADA parking is available in public lots on 6th Street, at Lincoln and 6th, and at Oak and 6th. 20-minute parking zones are available on 5th and 6th Streets for short stops at the courthouse.
Free public parking lots are located at 525 6th Street and 625 6th Street in Woodland, both within a short walk of the courthouse. For longer visits, look for public parking in downtown Woodland surrounding the courthouse complex. Woodland is roughly 15 miles northwest of Sacramento via I-5 or Highway 113.
If your case originates in West Sacramento, Davis, or Winters, your court appearances will still be in Woodland — Yolo County’s court operations are consolidated at this single location.
