Address: 550 6th Street, Oakland, CA 94607

Status: Closed (since June 2019)

Operated by: Alameda County Sheriff’s Office

The Glenn E. Dyer Detention Facility, sometimes called the North County Jail, was Alameda County’s downtown Oakland detention center until it closed in June 2019. The closure was a cost-saving consolidation — both Glenn Dyer and Santa Rita Jail in Dublin had been operating at roughly half capacity, and the Sheriff’s Office moved all inmate operations to Santa Rita. Glenn Dyer no longer accepts bookings, holds inmates, or offers visitation.

Where Loved Ones Are Booked Now

If someone has been arrested in Oakland, Berkeley, Hayward, or anywhere else in Alameda County, they will be booked into Santa Rita Jail at 5325 Broder Boulevard in Dublin. The Sheriff’s Office operates an online inmate locator where you can confirm custody status; you can also call Santa Rita directly at (925) 551-6500.

The Dublin location adds significant transport time for officers and visitors compared to the old downtown Oakland facility — particularly during commute hours. Plan accordingly.

What This Means for Defendants

The change in booking location doesn’t change the underlying criminal process. Cases arising in Oakland still move through the René C. Davidson Courthouse at 1225 Fallon Street. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and Public Defender are still headquartered downtown. Only the physical custody location has shifted.

What it does mean: family members and attorneys need to drive to Dublin to visit, and the longer transport adds friction to in-custody court appearances. Having a defense attorney ready to act quickly after booking — before arraignment — matters even more under the consolidated system.

If You’re Trying to Locate Someone

If you arrived at the Glenn Dyer address expecting to visit or post bail, the facility is no longer operational. Confirm custody status through the Alameda County Sheriff’s Inmate Locator, then route any visit or bail action to Santa Rita Jail.
