The Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC) is Sacramento County’s primary custody facility for inmates sentenced to county jail, located on Bruceville Road in Elk Grove — roughly half an hour south of downtown Sacramento. The facility is co-educational and houses both pretrial detainees (overflow from the Sacramento County Main Jail) and sentenced inmates, with a capacity of around 2,000 to 2,600 people. Female inmates are housed in a separate section of the complex; their mailing address uses 12450 Bruceville Road.

If a Loved One Has Just Been Booked

People arrested in Sacramento County are generally booked at the Main Jail at 651 I Street downtown, then transferred to RCCC for longer-term housing or sentencing. To confirm where your loved one is currently held, use the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Inmate Information system — the same locator covers both facilities.

A few things worth knowing in those first hours:

• All inmate phone calls and emails are monitored. Don’t discuss what happened over the jail phone or in email messages.
• Arraignment typically happens within 48 hours of arrest, excluding weekends and holidays. Sacramento County criminal cases are heard at the Gordon D. Schaber Courthouse downtown.
• Medical or mental health concerns for an RCCC inmate can be sent to (916) 875-9782, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office promises follow-up within 24 hours.

Bail and Release

Bail amounts are set by the Sacramento County bail schedule. Bail can be posted in cash or through a licensed bail bondsman. An attorney can request a bail hearing to argue for a reduction or release on own recognizance (OR release). For lower-level offenses, release on a citation may be available without bail.

Visiting Someone at RCCC

All visits are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Inmates are allowed two 45-minute visits per week, with visits scheduled the day before or earlier. The visiting schedule mirrors the Main Jail’s general structure, but specific procedures and hours can differ — confirm by checking the RCCC inmate visitation page.

A few things to know:

• Bring a valid government-issued photo ID — driver’s license or DMV ID card from any state or Mexico, U.S. passport, military ID, or Mexican Consulate card.
• Anyone released from RCCC or the Main Jail within the past 30 days, or anyone convicted of a felony and confined in state prison, cannot visit without prior consent of the Jail Commander or Watch Supervisor (per Penal Code 4571).
• Cell phones, electronics, food, drinks, and personal items are prohibited in the visit area.
• Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who can show proof of relationship.
