The San Joaquin County Jail — also known as the John Zunino Jail Complex — is the county’s main detention facility, located in French Camp about six miles south of Stockton. The complex opened in 1992 and houses both pretrial detainees and inmates sentenced to county jail terms (up to 24 months), with a capacity for roughly 1,550 adults across multiple housing units. The complex includes a Jail Core, a South Jail, and the adjacent San Joaquin Honor Farm for minimum-security inmates. Anyone arrested in San Joaquin County — Stockton, Manteca, Tracy, Lodi, Lathrop, and surrounding cities — is typically booked here.

If a Loved One Has Just Been Booked

To confirm someone is in custody, use the San Joaquin Sheriff’s “Who’s in Custody” online roster or call the 24-hour Jail Information line at (209) 468-4562. Have the person’s full name and date of birth ready.

A few things worth knowing in those first hours:

• All inmate phone calls are recorded. Don’t discuss what happened over the jail phone.
• Arraignment typically happens within 48 hours of arrest, excluding weekends and holidays. San Joaquin County criminal cases are heard at the Stockton Courthouse or, for cases originating in Manteca, the Manteca Branch Court.
• Phone calls are funded through Securus — set up an account online or call (800) 844-6591.

Bail and Release

Bail amounts are set by the San Joaquin County bail schedule. Bail can be posted in cash at the jail or with a cashier’s check (made out to San Joaquin County Superior Court), or through a licensed bail bondsman. An attorney can request a bail hearing to argue for a reduction or release on own recognizance (OR release). For lower-level offenses, release on a citation may be available without requiring bail.

A few things to know:

• Bring current government-issued photo ID. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with proof of relationship.
• Children must remain supervised and cannot disrupt visits.
• Cell phones, pagers, cameras, recording devices, weapons, drugs, alcohol, lighters, and matches are prohibited. No purses, diaper bags, or strollers.
• Visitors under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be denied entry.
